WE’RE A Traditional service with a contemporary feel.
Newark Central is a church with hymnbooks and choirs and organ music, while we also mix in more contemporary gospel music and recent Christian praise songs. We're not formal, but we are respectful of what it means to come into the presence of God through worship -- you'll see all manner of dress in our sanctuary, from suits to jeans, from t-shirts to top hats . . . okay, probably no top hats.
Our early service is a bit shorter, with no children's moment or choirs; it's 45 to 50 minutes long, and like all of our services includes communion, which is open to all.
This worship experience generally goes about 70 minutes, and includes communion; there is a children's church that goes upstairs after the opening portion of the service, and a nursery.
our community welcomes you
We enjoy special services as well as the regular Sunday round of worship; our sense of who God is and what it means to live thankfully means we take our worship on the road -- monthly to nursing homes in the community, out to our church lodge on the east side of Newark (503 Eleanor Parkway) each summer, our audience participation Living Nativity, and Christmas Eve candlelight services. It's all intended to help us draw closer to God's love, which is what the Gospel of Jesus Christ is all about. That's also why since our founding we offer "open communion," which means you do not have to be a member to receive communion here. All are welcome to search themselves and to participate as you feel called. In most services, communion is distributed to where you're sitting, and we hold the bread and the cup so that we can receive communion together.
