Newark Central Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) invites all to come and join in worship together. Our prayer is that as you worship you can see and feel that you are loved, accepted, and welcomed just as you are whether you are a first-time guest or have been worshipping here for years.
WHAT TO EXPECT IN WORSHIP
Worship has traditional and modern elements that blend together, depending on the season, and include a mix of familiar hymns and contemporary praise music. We Worship through scripture, prayer, message, song, and the partaking of Communion, the Lord’s Supper, each time we Worship together.
Length of the Service generally is about 60+ minutes.
Young Worshippers are a gift to the church and a reminder that God’s love is part of our lives from our very beginnings. Parents, relax, and feel free to engage with them if they have questions about what is happening. Their energy and curiosity are signs of God’s life in them; wiggles and a little noise are just part of being a kid! There are special materials available in the Narthex that are just for them to use during Worship. They are also encouraged to come forward for the Moment for Young Disciples before our Pre-K 4 Yr Olds to 5th graders head upstairs to Children’s Church. The Nursery, just across from the restrooms on the main floor, is available as a place of respite for caregivers to take any child, when needed, during worship.

ELEMENTS OF WORSHIP
There are many elements of worship that we do each Sunday or at specific points throughout the year.
PRAYER REQUESTS
Prayer is a vital part of our worship. We share in the Praises & Prayers of the congregation and community. If you have a prayer to share you can write it down and put it in the offering plate, as passed, or you can email it to [email protected]. Please note if it is for our ministers, elders, or the congregation at large. We also often extend an invitation for specific prayer for yourself & others as part of worship where you are invited to come forward so the Ministers and Elders can pray along with you for yourself or others.
THE LORD'S PRAYER
When invited, we pray aloud together. Please use the words below, or the words most familiar to you. (Matt. 6:9-13 & Luke 11:1-4)
Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name.
Thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our SINS
as we forgive those who have SINNED against us;
and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil,
for thine is the kingdom, and the power and the glory, forever, Amen.
THE LORD'S SUPPER (COMMUNION)
Our congregation celebrates the Lord's Supper every Sunday, and we practice open communion which means we believe that all who believe in Jesus Christ are welcome to share in this act of Worship. You can also choose not to. Both the bread and the cup will be passed to you in the pew. Hold the bread and place the cup in the cup holder on the back of the pew in front of you until directed to partake of the bread and the cup as the Words of Institution (1 Cor. 11:23-25) are given. Return the cup to the holder for our Diaconate (Deacons) to collect after worship has concluded.
BECOMING A MEMBER OF CENTRAL CHRISTIAN CHURCH
A regular part of worship is when we extend the Invitation to Discipleship. You will be invited to become a member of the church by coming forward to stand with our Ministers as a hymn is sung.
We accept members through TRANSFER and by CONFESSION.
Transfer means you have been an active member of another church and want to place your membership at Newark Central Christian Church (Disciples of Christ).
Confession of Faith is for those who have never belonged to a church, or who want to renew their commitment to their faith, if it has been a while. The Minister will ask you: "Do you believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of the living God, and do you accept Him as your Lord and Savior?" If so, say “I do.” You will then be welcomed, in love, by the whole church!
BAPTISM
This congregation practices Believer’s Baptism by immersion, submersion, for those who have reached the age of understanding and who make a Confession of their Faith. We do this because Jesus was baptized this way. (Matt. 3:13-17, Mark 1:9-11 & Luke 3:21-22) If you have been baptized and confirmed in another tradition, it is not necessary to be immersed; we accept all forms of Christian Baptism.
PARENT/CHILD DEDICATIONS
Periodically throughout the year, parents will bring their infant/toddler forward for dedication. We practice infant/child dedication instead of infant/child baptism because Jesus was. (Luke 2:21-40) This is a time for parents to give thanks for the birth of their child, recommit their own faiths, and for the congregation to commit itself to providing nurture, love, and support for the child and their parents.
